Recent software project I am working for a client is a web-based work-flow management system. The main tools I used are PHP and AJAX. This is the first serious PHP and AJAX project I ever worked. I was on of the Java fans, but well.. if it is web-based project, I wouldn't choose Java, JSP, or J2EE.

During the development of this project, I have been struggling with user-interface and data representation. DHTMLX components from http://www.dhtmlx.com/ are really impressive. Table on web has never been easier. It allows interaction through JavaScript and AJAX dynamic loading. I'm very happy with it and just in case you might want to try for your web-based software project.
